Smallville, which has graced our screens since 31 December 2001, and still running in its tenth season, is an important part of our incredible journey through the tales of Superman.
For years we’ve see him in his adult life, rushing into telephone boxes to ditch his "geek" disguise, reappearing with slicked back hair and a red cape that affords him the ability to fly to the rescue, just in the nick of time to save the latest distressed victim falling from a skyscraper. Now we go back to
Smallville , where Clark Kent first arrived on Earth.
Warner Bros’ ingenious production is like a time machine that journeys back to put some of the missing pieces together in Superman’s wondrous history. It tells the story of a teenage boy who descends on earth during a meteor shower. He lands in Smallville, Kansas and is found by Martha and Jonathan Kent, who later adopt him. But he is no ordinary boy, rather, an alien with superpowers, which he himself has yet to discover and come to terms with, as well as other truths revealed along the way.
From the word go, he finds himself using his superpowers to save the people, battling against villains who’ve become powerful themselves, having been exposed to Kryptonite. Never far from the scene of an incident, not only does he find it difficult to keep his superpowers a secret but it doesn’t take long for people to begin suspecting he has some involvement in the catastrophes which ensue.
Smallville solves the mystery of Superman’s youth, giving audiences an intrinsic view of what life was like for Clark during his early years on Earth. For all the fans out there, here are a few facts you may not have known about Smallville:
• With 8.4 million viewers watching the pilot episode, a record was broken for Warner Bros.’ highest rated debut.
• Tom Welling, who has starred as Clark Kent from the beginning, is not a co-executive producer of the show.
• Originally, the production was to be filmed in Australia, but Vancouver proved to be more in keeping with Middle American terrain and became home of the set.
• The Interior of Smallville High was filmed at Templeton Secondary School in Vancouver and as the production team had painted over much of its original colours, the school adopted the red and yellows of Smallville High as its own official colours.
